Scientific facts of Having Fasting

Fasting or we call as puasa in Indonesia is a period where each of baligh muslims do not eat, drink, have a sex(for couple of husband-wife) from dawn to sunset in Ramadhan month. They end the fasting when adzan comes.
Fasting is mandatory on every Muslim who is sane, adult, able and resident. The following exemptions apply:
  1. the insane;
  2. children who are not adolescent yet;
  3. the elderly and chronically ill for whom fasting is unreasonably strenuous; Such persons are required to feed at least one poor person every day in Ramadan for which he or she has missed fasting.
  4. pregnant women and nursing may postpone the fasting at a later time;
  5. the ill and the travellers can also defer their fasting.

أَيَّامًا مَعْدُودَاتٍ ۚ فَمَنْ كَانَ مِنْكُمْ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ ۚ وَعَلَى الَّذِينَ يُطِيقُونَهُ فِدْيَةٌ طَعَامُ مِسْكِينٍ ۖ فَمَنْ تَطَوَّعَ خَيْرًا فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لَهُ ۚ وَأَنْ تَصُومُوا خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ ۖ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ

ayyaaman ma’duudaatin faman kaana minkum mariidhan aw ‘alaa safarin fa’iddatun min ayyaamin ukhara wa’alaa alladziina yuthiiquunahu fidyatun tha’aamu miskiinin faman tathawwa’a khayran fahuwa khayrun lahu wa-an tashuumuu khayrun lakum in kuntum ta’lamuuna


[Fasting for] a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] - then an equal number of days [are to be made up]. And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]. And whoever volunteers excess - it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.
